The Novels of Star Wars

This is a chronological list of Star Wars Novels. No comics or games, just the books.... well okay, and a few graphic novels. I am including the in-continuity young readers series books, as well as a few graphic novels relevant to the story in other EU books.

2 Good EU references:
- The Star Wars New Essential Chronology*
- Star Wars Timeline Gold

Note: Some of the different eras overlap where an era starts within another era. Also, I have tried to keep series books together even though some books jump ahead and coincide with others on the timeline - those dates are noted (see the X-Wing series starting 6ABY). Otherwise, if an entry doesnt have a year BBY or ABY after it, it occurs at at the same time or right after the last entry with a date above it.

BBY = (years) Before the Battle of Yavin
ABY = (years) After the Battle of Yavin
(@ ) = Expected release date
*GN* = Graphic Novel (there's just a few in here)

Del Rey's Star Wars Timeline

Del Rey's Star Wars home page
- This will link to *most* of the books and a little summary, except for the graphic novels and young readers books of course (I've tried to link the latter to their publisher or other info).

*A good EU primer
If you havent had the pleasure to own or read the Star Wars New Essential Chronology, but would like to get an idea of the EU with a little synapsis of how all the books, comics and games of the EU link together, I highly recommend this article on sw.com (it rocks!): Endnotes for The New Essential Chronology

My endnotes

This will be an ongoing process as new books come out and with the help of other fans to tell me if I've missed anything. I basically wanted to make this list for my own reference, but have seen others who were looking for a "books only list", so I figured I'd go live with it and share the love. If you were looking for this list, enjoy!

Here's my little intro (even though it's at the end) and disclaimer. I have been a complete and total SW film purist until about a month after ROTS was released ( okay! i lied!! ). Now I am an EU noob and spoiler feind (of which you will find none in this blog). My disclaimer is that I still will not be reading any of the film novelizations. Its a film purism thing. Hey - we all have our "thing". Even if I have TESB and ANH novels from when I was a kid... I dont actually remember them.

December 2005 - Well, previously my disclaimer included not reading any books within the film era as well. Now that has changed since Dark Lord was released. I am also indulging in the young readers series Last of the Jedi which coincides with Dark Lord and takes place right after ROTS. I'm sure there will be many more to come, but no film novelizations still - I still feel the same way about those.

I'm also starting to get back into the comics again, which I hadnt paid much attention to since the early 80s. I recently was reunited with my old SW Marvel Comics collection, of which I didnt remember how many I actually had. It starts from #1 and runs somewhere into the 60s, with very few missing issues, and thankfully not too much damage to most of them for being in a cardboard box in a barn attic for 25 years or so. Now, Dark Horse has reprinted that whole series in the form of omnibus style TPBS, called "A long Time Ago...", Of which I hope to collect. I'll save the comics talk for another blog maybe.

I also got lucky and found the first issue of KOTOR recently (they were selling out quick, I got the last copy in the shop), and hope to continue with that series - ah, there's something about a fresh start with a new series.

March, 2006 - LOL @ me above... not a n00b no mo'! I've read a ton of stuff, and have learned so much in relatively short amount of time. I'm actually starting to feel a little more caught up to my friends who have been reading the EU since it really started to get published.

Thanks, JKT

Since I have nothing better to do, I copied and pasted this list into Word, and colour-coded everything based on what I have, or don't have, or absolutely need in the near future. So thanks for posting this! I will certainly bookmark it and use it in the future!

I started reading EU books before Episode 3, with Labyrinth of Evil, and now I don't want to stop! I was just wondering, do you think you'll bother trying to get your hands on hard-to-find books like Young Jedi Knights and that Glove of Vader series?

I still have a lot of catching up to do...I guess I'd better get back to reading!

Hey! LOL - Yeah, I get a shudder of urgencey when I look at this list and the multitude of books.

The first 6 YJK books are put into two seperate omnibus that you can find easily. I put them up in the list there; Jedi Sunrise and Jedi Shadow. We have them in the USA at most Borders and Barnes and Noble... not sure how the big bookstores work in Canada though (yeah, I saw you were from there).

I wasn't even planning on reading the YJK at all, except those omnibus, but I just so happened to have found #s 7 and 8 at a used bookstore, leaving only the last 3 out of my collection. I haven't read them yet though. My primary concern is to get through NJO and Dark Nest and start the Legacy series - even though I'm waiting for Betrayal in PB next year... but a friend of mine who bought it is willing to lend it to me.

Oh - And it's possible that many hard to find books willl go into reprint if the demand is there. I think there's a recent resurgence of EU popularity, so the publishers might be compelled to put books back to print. It could be a matter of fans getting together and petitioning the publishers to do so.

I'm hoping for the Jedi Apprentice series to get reprinted, and to omnibus since 18 books are a lot to buy seperately (like the large amount of YJK books too - each book is very short - so why not?).

Funny thing is I have cobbled together most of the JA books used - all except #15 and one of the special editions. Some of the resell prices on those are obscene though.

Marvolo said...

I can't find the YJK series anywhere. Same with Splinter of the Mind's Eye until a few weeks ago, when I picked it up for about two dollars at a used book store. Oh well, I suppose that's what ebay is for!

I'm hoping for reprintings too. I was happy to see that Dark Horse finally caught on and is coming out with the x-wing omnibus. Hopefully the book publishers will do the same. But for now I'm not too concerned with the hard-to-find stuff. I've still got half of the NJO and Dark Nest waiting to be read.

starthunder said...

Yeah, I own enough books already that still need to be read. I probably wont get to the YJK books that I have for awhile. They're low priority to me. They're not too pertinent to the continuity, even though they have Jaina and Jacen growing up in their Jedi training and all.

It sort of makes me mad that a lot of the out of print books are semi in-continuity, and were printed as recently as the late 90s to early 00s, and they are out of print and hard to find. I guess it's not the biggest readership, but still.

I don't know how this works across the border, but here's my search result from border.com (bookstore, I'm pretty sure you have them in Canada?) for Jedi Shadow (YJK 1-3)- http://www.bordersstores.com/search/title_detail.jsp?id=53075195&srchTerms=jedi+shadow&mediaType=1&srchType=Keyword

and here's the search result for Jedi Sunrise (YJK 4-6):
http://www.bordersstores.com/search/title_detail.jsp?id=53075198&srchTerms=jedi+sunrise&mediaType=1&srchType=Keyword

Dark Horse is keeping all the SW stuff in print now and there will probably be more to come. They put out the ALTA series to omnibus volumes, put every SW series to TPB almost, and are reprinting a lot of things that were previously hard to find. They're starting to put the TOTJ series back out which is very cool.
